Le Laudes creaturarum
Il cantico di Frate sole o cantico delle creature viene considerato il primo testo letterario in volgare. Dalle biografie (Legenda antiqua perusina, Speculum perfectionis) viene riferito che San Francesco scrisse il cantico in tre fasi: la prima parte sarebbe stata composta dopo una notte tormentata, di grandi sofferenze, in cui il santo si sentì tentato dal diavolo; i versi 23-27 sarebbero stati aggiunti in seguito ad una disputa tra il vescovo e il podestà di Assisi e la parte finale risalirebbe a pochi giorni prima della sua morte.
Nonostante le apparenze, il testo non è un’opera ingenua e spontanea ma ha dei precedenti letterari, identificabili nel Vecchio Testamento, in particolare nei Salmi, a cui si rifà la struttura parallelistica del componimento, e nei Vangeli, precisamente nel discorso delle Beatitudini (Matteo 5,3-10; Luca 6,20-23). Consta di versetti di stampo biblico raccolti in lasse irregolari, dai due ai cinque versi ed era rivestito di un accompagnamento musicale attribuito a Francesco stesso, sulla falsariga del canto gregoriano dei salmi.
